I'm so happy with this machine. Perfect stitches every time! The auto threader and cutter are game changers, no more squinting or hunting for scissors and the stay stitch feature gives me a neat and professional finish.

I cannot recommend The Sewing Studio highly enough! I recently purchased an embroidery machine from them, and the entire experience has been absolutely flawless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let us help with the answers.

Can I teach myself to use a sewing machine?

Yes and many people do! Like any new skill, it takes time and a bit of patience. Helpful guides like and books walk you through the basics step by step. YouTube is another great resource – we have a library of video tutorials covering everything from threading your first machine to more advanced techniques.

Are higher-priced sewing machines worth it?

Often, yes. A higher-priced, professional sewing machine is usually better built, with sturdier components and smoother operation. Many common frustrations – skipped stitches, jamming or struggling with thicker fabrics come from using a machine that isn't suited to the task. That said, there's little point in paying for features you won't use. The key is matching the machine to your projects, not just your budget.

Is a computerised sewing machine better than a mechanical one?

Both machine types are easy to use with practice and produce beautiful results. Which one you select is simply down to personal preference, budget and your individual sewing goals. Creative sewers who want fully customisable projects often prefer computerised machines. These makers appreciate features like stitch memory and customised stitch designs, multi-directional sewing and wireless connectivity for bespoke design options. Choose a mechanical machine if you want something that feels straightforward and sew primarily basic seams, hems and simple projects.

Which sewing machine is best for a beginner?

When choosing your first machine, it helps to think about what you intend to sew, ease of use, reliability and most importantly, will the machine grow with you as your skills develop. Essential features to consider are a needle threader (makes threading much easier), a drop-in bobbin (often means less jamming), adjustable stitch length/width, a handful of essential stitches (such as straight, overcast, zigzag and a one-step buttonhole) and a free arm for sewing tricky to reach areas like cuffs or sleeves. We stock a range of beginner sewing machines, as well as intermediate and professional machines if you're looking to grow your skills over time.

How much should I spend on a sewing machine?

It depends on your experience and what you plan to make. For a reliable sewing machine that handles a good range of fabrics and projects, expect to spend between £300 and £800. If you're looking for more advanced features – larger workspace, embroidery options, or heavy-duty performance – a budget of £1,000 to £1,500 will open up more options. We're happy to help you find something that fits your needs and budget.

Which sewing machine is best for home use?

All the sewing machines we stock are designed for home use. The right choice often depends on your available space. If you have a dedicated sewing room, you might prefer a larger machine with an extension table. If you sew at the kitchen table and pack away afterwards, a lighter, more compact model will be easier to move and store when not in use. Think about where you'll be sewing before you buy.

What is the most reliable brand of sewing machine?

We only stock brands with a strong reputation for reliability and build quality.  Janome, BERNINA, Brother, Bernette, Pfaff, and baby lock are all trusted manufacturers with long histories in the industry. Each has its strengths – BERNINA is known for precision engineering, Brother for user-friendly features, Janome for solid all-round performance.  If you're unsure which brand suits you, get in touch with us.
