Janome 423S Sewing Machine Product Review and Demonstration
The Janome 423S is a mechanical sewing machine with a robust metal body to withstand years of regular use. It is a favourite in schools and sewing classrooms, where fuss-free operation and reliability are essential. This is a great machine for both beginners and for those with more experience.
Set up is straightforward. Stitch selection is via a simple dial while sliders adjust the stitch length and width to suit the fabric being sewn. There is a built-in needle threader and the front-loading bobbin uses a metal hook designed for long-term use.
With 24 built-in stitches plus an automatic 1-step buttonhole, the 423S covers everyday sewing, dressmaking and repairs. Adjustable foot pressure helps it feed everything from delicate and stretchy fabrics through to heavier layers, and the drop feed opens up free motion stitching, freehand embroidery and darning. A built-in thread cutter lets you trim threads quickly between seams.
The free arm makes light work of sleeves, cuffs and trouser hems, and the hard cover keeps dust off between projects or on the way to classes.
For sewers who want a machine that simply gets on with the job, the Janome 423S is a choice you can rely on.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Janome 423S
Let us help with the answers.
Is the Janome 423S suitable for beginners?
Yes. The dial stitch selection and slider controls make it one of the easiest machines to learn on, and it has the stitch range to keep up as your skills grow.
What feet come with the Janome 423S?
The machine includes four snap-on feet: an automatic 1-step buttonhole foot, a 2mm rolled hem foot, a standard foot and a zipper foot. It takes Janome Category A feet, so more options are available.
Can the Janome 423S handle heavy fabrics?
Yes. It is designed to handle everything from lightweight and stretchy materials to heavier layers, so you can move between different types of project on one machine.
How does the automatic 1-step buttonhole work?
Attach the buttonhole foot and place your button into it. The machine then sews a buttonhole sized to match that button in one continuous step, giving consistent results every time.
What warranty comes with this machine?
The Janome 423S includes a 2-year parts and labour warranty. You can extend this to a maximum of 5 years within 30 days of purchase.
Can I use the Janome 423S for free motion embroidery?
Yes. Dropping the feed dogs frees the fabric for creative stitching, and the same setting covers darning, so the 423S handles decorative work and mending alike.
Is the Janome 423S mechanical or computerised?
The 423S is a mechanical machine. All settings are adjusted by hand using the dial and sliders, which means fewer electronics, simple operation and straightforward long-term servicing.
Our standard width fabric can be cut as a Fat Quarter, measuring 50cm x 1/2 the width of the bolt. Above is an example of how your fabric will be received, depending on the quantity ordered.
We also offer a sample service, where you can order 1 single fat quarter of any standard width fabric, to have at home and compare colours. When you are finished, you can send them back to us for a refund (feel free to contact us for more information on this service).
Our fabric can be cut as a Long Quarter, measuring a minimum of 25cm x width of bolt. We will supply the fabric as a continuous length (eg; if you bought 1.25m it will be sent as one piece of fabric).
