Janome Atelier 5 Anniversary Edition Product Review & Demonstration

The Janome Atelier 5 Anniversary Edition is a fully computerised sewing machine designed to make sewing effortless and enjoyable with its array of handy automatic features and thoughtful design. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced sewer, this machine is packed with tools to help you create with ease.

The 7 piece Superior Feed System (SFS) keeps fabric flat and parallel through every stitch cycle so layered work doesn't shift and stitch length stays true across cottons, quilt sandwiches and curtain-weight materials. Paired with automatic thread tension and 71 needle positions for precision placement the Atelier 5 will take your sewing to a new level.

Enjoy 170 built-in stitches, including 1 monogramming font (with European accented and Cyrillic letters) and 10 buttonhole styles. Dressmakers wanting to add decorative details and embellishments will enjoy the 9mm stitch width for full-size decorative work. The lettering stitches enable you to personalise your work with names, dates and initials for a bespoke touch.

The 210mm workspace to the right of the needle, paired with the extra-wide extension table included with the machine, gives you the room to handle full-size quilts, curtain panels and dressmaking projects without constantly bunching fabric. The quick-change needle plate switches from zigzag to straight stitch in seconds with no screwdriver required.

Other convenient features include the automatic thread cutter, the semi-automatic needle threader, 6 bright LED lights, a free-arm for sewing tubular items like sleeves and cuffs, the start/stop button and the slide speed controller which lets you sew without the foot pedal when needed.

With its thoughtful features and a wide range of accessories, feet and tools, this is a fantastic choice for serious sewers and makers.

Janome Atelier 5: A Machine for Every Maker

And every project

Precision Dressmaking

The Atelier 5 was made for dressmaking, cosplay, upcycling and repairs to your favourite pieces. The 9mm stitch width opens up full-size decorative stitches and impactful alphabet lettering for personalisation, dates and initials. 71 needle positions give the placement accuracy for topstitching, zips and seam allowances. The pattern memory features allows you to save your preferred combinations ready for the next time you sit down to sew.

Large Quilts and Home Furnishings

Designed for ambitious makes, the generous 8 ¼" workspace combined with the extra-wide extension table provides ample room for quilting, curtain making and bulky home décor sewing projects. The 7-piece superior feed system delivers fantastic fabric control for all fabric types while the included straight stitch plate is perfect for achieving professional seams on curtains, tablecloths and other home textiles.

Bags and Accessories

The die-cast aluminium frame provides stability for thick materials and heavy layers. It handles bulky seams with ease so you can make structured handbags, everyday totes, purses and travel accessories with professional results even on heavy materials.

Inside the Janome Atelier 5 Anniversary Edition

Fully Computerised Stitch System

Stitch selection runs through a flip-up cover and number pad, with an LCD display confirming your choice. The system stores combinations of stitches and alphabets in memory for quick recall on repeat work.

7-Piece Superior Feed System

Seven feed dogs work together to keep fabric flat and parallel through every stitch cycle. This stops shifting on layered work and keeps stitch length true across cottons, quilt sandwiches and curtain-weight materials.

Horizontal Full Rotary Hook Bobbin

The drop-in bobbin sits in a horizontal full rotary hook system, which resists thread jams during long runs. A clear cover lets you see the thread supply at a glance while sewing.

One Step Plate Converter

A button swap moves the machine from zigzag to straight stitch plate, with no screwdriver required. An internal sensor blocks wider stitch widths when the straight plate is fitted, protecting your needle.

Knee Lifter and Free Hand Operation

The included knee lifter raises and lowers the presser foot through a knee-operated lever, leaving both hands free to position fabric. This is particularly useful for pivoting on quilt corners and appliqué.

Ratings & Reviews

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Atelier 5 Anniversary Edition suitable for quilters?

Yes, particularly if you're working on full-size quilts. The 210mm workspace and the extra-wide extension table give you the surface area to manage a quilt sandwich without bunching, and the knee lifter keeps both hands on the fabric when you pivot on corners or stop to reposition.

What's different about the Anniversary Edition?

The Anniversary Edition celebrates ten years of the Atelier series with a slimmer chassis and midnight blue accents, and ships with the extra-wide extension table and Petite Sewing Kit pouch as standard. The core feature set sits on the same Atelier platform Janome has refined since launch.

How does the quick-change needle plate actually work?

You select the plate change function on the machine and the One Step plate converter releases the needle plate without tools. Swap to the straight stitch plate for piecing or lightweight fabrics, and a sensor stops you accidentally selecting a wider stitch that would catch the needle.

Can I save my own stitch combinations?

Yes. The Atelier 5 stores combinations of stitches and alphabet characters in memory, which is useful for recurring projects like labelling quilt blocks, monogramming gifts or repeating decorative borders. Saved sequences are recalled with a few button presses rather than rebuilt each time.

Is it heavy enough to stay stable but light enough to move?

At 10.20kg, the machine is substantial enough to sit firmly on the table during high-speed work, but light enough to lift onto and off a sewing cabinet without help. The semi-rigid cover protects it between sessions if you need to store it away.
