Mechanical Sewing Machines

A mechanical sewing machine is operated using dials, levers and sliders rather than a screen. You select the stitch, set the length and width and start sewing. There are no menus to learn and no settings to save, which means these machines are quick to pick up.

A mechanical machine adjusts stitch settings manually through dials, while a computerised machine uses a screen and electronic controls to select stitches. Computerised models often add automatic thread cutting, needle up and down and stitch memory. Mechanical machines usually cost less, have fewer parts to go wrong and are simpler to troubleshoot, so you can often solve a problem yourself rather than booking a service. Yes. Mechanical machines are one of the most popular starting points because everything you need is visible on the front of the machine. There is no menu to learn, so you can thread up and sew on your first day. Models such as the Janome J3-18 and J3-24 keep the controls to a clearly labelled stitch dial and a length and width adjustment, which means there is very little to take in before you start sewing.

Look for a metal internal frame, which means the machine stays stable as you sew and copes with regular use over many years. A good spread of utility stitches covering straight, zigzag, overcast and stretch will handle most everyday sewing, and a one-step buttonhole is worth having if you make garments. An automatic needle threader and a drop-in bobbin make setting up quicker, adjustable stitch length and width give you control over the finish while a free arm allows you to sew cuffs and sleeves. Adjustable presser foot pressure is useful if you move between delicate and heavy fabrics.
