Brother CV3440 Product Review and Demonstration
The Brother CV3440 is a coverstitch machine built for sewers who want a clean, professional finish on knits and stretch fabrics. It handles four main stitches, a triple coverstitch, wide coverstitch, narrow coverstitch and chain stitch, so you can hem activewear, finish necklines and add decorative topstitching with confidence. The coverstitch sits on the underside of the fabric while a neat topstitch shows on the front, so hems stay flat and stretchy as the fabric moves.
Threading follows familiar sewing machine logic with colour-coded paths, so setup is straightforward for anyone moving up from a standard machine. The differential feed prevents stretching and rippling on knits and jersey, giving you even, professional results. A one-touch tension release lets you lift the foot and release all tensions instantly, which makes threading and fabric removal quicker.
The built-in free arm lets you hem sleeves, cuffs and necklines with ease, while the 155mm working space gives you room for larger projects such as home furnishings. An LED work light keeps the needle area brightly lit, and adjustable presser foot pressure helps you match the machine to different fabric weights.
This is a compact, long-arm cover hem machine made to last and it slots neatly into any sewing setup.
Top Uses for the Brother CV3440

This machine is perfect for
- T-shirt and knit garment makers wanting professional ready to wear style hems
- The spacious working area provides plenty of room for handling larger projects, such as hemming dresses or adding accents to furnishings
- Beginners to coverstitching who find overlocker threading intimidating
- Home sewists making activewear, leggings and children's clothes
Can sew but not ideal for
- Top-side decorative stitching - the decorative looper grid forms on the underside of the fabric, so you would need to sew with your work reversed. For true top cover stitches, consider the Brother CV3550 or use our Machine Match Service and we'll recommend a model suited to your needs
Not suitable for
- Makers expecting it to overlock edges - this is coverstitch only with no cutting blade
- Business use - this model is ideally suited to domestic and hobby sewing, not production volumes

Frequently Asked Questions About the Brother CV3440
Let us help with the answers.
Is the Brother CV3440 a coverstitch or an overlocker?
It is a dedicated coverstitch machine. It creates professional hems and topstitching on knits and stretch fabrics, but does not trim seams like an overlocker or sew standard seams like a regular machine.
What stitches can the Brother CV3440 sew?
The CV3440 sews four stitch types: a triple coverstitch, wide coverstitch, narrow coverstitch and a chain stitch. This lets you match the finish to your fabric and project, from hems to decorative detailing.
Is the Brother CV3440 suitable for beginners?
The Brother CV3440 is designed for intermediate and experienced sewers who want professional coverstitch finishes. However, colour-coded thread guides and one-touch tension release make setup and threading more straightforward than you might expect.
Can the Brother CV3440 handle stretch fabrics?
Yes. The differential feed balances how the fabric feeds through, which means your hems and seams stay flat, even and elastic without puckering.
What warranty comes with this machine?
The Brother CV3440 includes a 3-year parts and labour warranty for domestic use *Business use only 1 year warranty, backed by authorised Brother servicing nationwide and support from The Sewing Studio team.
How does the one-touch tension release work?
Lifting the presser foot releases all thread tensions at once. The benefit is that you re-thread and clear your fabric without resetting each dial by hand.
Does the Brother CV3440 have a free arm?
Yes. The built-in free arm lets you work on narrow tubular sections, giving you control when finishing small or curved items.
Our standard width fabric can be cut as a Fat Quarter, measuring 50cm x 1/2 the width of the bolt. Above is an example of how your fabric will be received, depending on the quantity ordered.
We also offer a sample service, where you can order 1 single fat quarter of any standard width fabric, to have at home and compare colours. When you are finished, you can send them back to us for a refund (feel free to contact us for more information on this service).
Our fabric can be cut as a Long Quarter, measuring a minimum of 25cm x width of bolt. We will supply the fabric as a continuous length (eg; if you bought 1.25m it will be sent as one piece of fabric).
