baby lock Cover Stitch Product Review

The baby lock Cover Stitch has been engineered for exceptional stitch security, essential for dressmakers crafting garments that last. Sewers can achieve high-end, ready-to-wear finishes for a flawless professional finish on a wide range of fabrics from delicate knits to technical fabrics such as Lycra. This is a compact, powerful and efficient model with high-speed sewing and an easy set-up at its core.

baby lock's patented Jet-Air Threading for the loopers removes what is typically the most fiddly part of using a coverstitch. Air transports the threads into the looper via a lever. Simply insert the looper thread into the threading opening, press the lever and the thread is automatically threaded into the looper eye. It couldn't be easier!

Vertical needle penetration prevents skipped stitches on stretch fabrics and auto tension release lets fabric slide in and out without resistance. This exclusive feature protects your fabric and prevents the needles from being damaged. It also gives you greater power when sewing. At 1,500 SPM, it runs fast enough for small-batch production but offers the control needed for hand-finished garments.

Stitch options cover the full range of knit garment construction. Wide and narrow cover stitches handle hems on necklines, sleeves and waistbands. The chain stitch works for stabilising woven seams, attaching elastic and applying bias binding. Differential feed prevents puckering on lightweight knits and gathers fabric when you want it to and the colour-coded tension dials make adjustments straightforward.

The chain-off function lets you sew off the edge of the fabric cleanly, leaving a tail rather than a thread jam at the end of a hem. A snap-on presser foot, built-in accessory storage, sewing light and carry handle round out the practical details. For sewers serious about knitwear, this is the dedicated coverstitch that completes a four-thread overlocker setup.

baby lock Cover Stitch: A Machine for Every Maker

And every project

Knit and Activewear Makers

The baby lock Cover Stitch is a super choice for makers working with technical fabrics, athleisure and performance clothing like gymwear, swimwear, dancewear and yoga outfits. It delivers durable and consistently reliable results on slippery and elastic materials that need strong seams that move with the fabric and that hold up to wash after wash.

Ambitious Dressmakers

For dressmakers seeking a high-end professional finish on a wide range of fabrics, the baby lock Cover Stitch delivers flawless results. The differential feed helps prevent stretching or puckering on fine materials.

This is a genuine small-batch production tool ideal for sewers running small home or studio-based independent clothing brands. It's incredibly easy to set up allowing for a fast workflow and dependable stitch consistency.

Decorative Finishing For A Bespoke Touch

Creative makers will appreciate the options beyond just durable hems and technical versatility. The chain stitch and decorative top-stitching applications open up creative finishing options. Use it for waistband construction, applying bias binding, or running visible top-stitch lines that give garments a ready-to-wear feel.

Inside the baby lock Cover Stitch

Jet-Air Threading System

baby lock's patented Jet-Air sends looper thread through tubular loopers at the press of a lever, removing the most fiddly part of operating a coverstitch entirely.

Vertical Needle Penetration

The needles enter fabric on a true vertical axis rather than at an angle, which prevents the skipped stitches that stretch fabrics typically produce on lesser machines.

Auto Tension Release

Lifting the presser foot automatically releases thread tension, so fabric slides in and out smoothly without snagging or fighting against the mechanism.

Differential Feed

Adjustable from 0.6 to 2.0, the feed mechanism feeds top and bottom layers at different rates to prevent puckering on lightweight knits or gather fabric for decorative effects.

Colour-Coded Tension System

Each tension dial is colour-matched to its corresponding thread path with clearly numbered settings, so adjustments are quick to make and easy to return to baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Coverstitch machine if I already have an Overlocker?

If you sew knitwear, yes. An overlocker finishes seam edges but cannot produce the elastic, professional hem you see on shop-bought t-shirts and sweatshirts. The two machines do different jobs and most serious knit sewers run them side by side rather than choosing between them.

How difficult is it to thread?

Easier than most coverstitch machines on the market. Jet-Air Threading handles the looper for you at the press of a lever, which is the part that intimidates most new owners. The needles are threaded conventionally and the manual walks you through the sequence step by step.

What fabrics can it handle?

The machine is built primarily for stretch knits including jersey, French terry, ribbing, fleece and activewear fabrics, but it also handles wovens for chain stitch construction and bias binding applications. Differential feed adjustment lets you fine-tune the feed for fabric weight and stretch.

Can I use it for decorative top-stitching?

Yes. The cover stitch produces two parallel rows of top-stitching with a looped chain underneath, which works as a decorative finish on hems, waistbands and seam lines. Run a contrasting thread colour through the looper for a more visible decorative effect.

Do you offer support after purchase?

Yes. The Sewing Studio is a certified baby lock service centre based in Cornwall, with in-house technicians available for setup advice, troubleshooting and servicing throughout the life of your machine. Live chat, email and phone support are available six days a week.
