Bernina 435 Sewing Machine Review
Here at the Sewing Studio, we love working on Bernina sewing machines, and the Bernina 435 Sewing Machine is no different.
This machine is well-built, has a healthy balance of features for every kind of maker! There are features that dressmakers will love, others programmed especially for quilters, and so much more! It’s a great machine for sewists of all levels, from beginners just learning how to use a machine and want to learn on a machine they’ll have for years to come to professionals who need something with a good amount of flair and features to get their word done and done well.
Now, Bernina has some of the best screens on their computerised sewing machines. They’re large enough and bright enough to see well, but they’re not too bright to where it’s blinding or even distracting. The full colour screen on the 435 model is 4.3 inches (10cm) in size and is also a touch screen where you can select your stitches and even ask for help from the machine itself if you get stuck! You’ll find built-in tutorials to teach you how to feed your fabric through, which presser foot to use, depending on the stitch you’re trying to use.
The Bernina 435 sewing machine boasts a large number of stitches to use for any kind of project. There are 650 stitches programmed in, including 9 buttonhole variations for every kind of fabric for all your dressmaking needs. You’ll also find 3 different alphabets worth of stitches and other decorative stitches included, too! There are also stitches programmed with quilters specifically in mind- 13 of them to be specific. And you can customise any stitch up to a width of 5.5mm and a length of 6mm.
If you’re a professional sewist that appreciates being able to work quickly, you’ll be happy to know that this machine can move fast! The Bernina 435 sewing machine can sew up to 900 stitches per minute! And if you prefer to sew a little slower, there’s a speed control slider on the front of the machine. Between the slider and the sensitive foot control, you’ll be able to easily control the speed of the machine so that you can sew at speeds that you are comfortable with or what your fabric can handle without being damaged (if you’re working with delicate fabrics like tool or mesh, this feature is important to consider!)
Adjustable presser foot pressure is also built into this sewing machine! What does that mean? Well, it means that you can easily adjust how much pressure the presser foot puts on the fabric as it feeds through the machine. If you’re sewing with something more delicate, you can make sure that the pressure of the foot isn’t going to rip it as the feed dogs grab and move it through. The opposite goes for thicker layers- you might want to make sure that the machine is able to grab it with enough pressure between the foot and the feed dogs.
If your looking for sewing machines that are easy to thread, the Bernina 435 should certainly be on your list to consider! The built-in needle threader is very easy to use and great for anyone. It threads the needle perfectly every time! You’ll also find that the threading instructions are easy to follow, arrows printed directly onto the machine to remind you which step is next as you guide the thread through the working parts of the machine.
If you’re wondering about how much workspace this sewing machine has, you’ll be happy to know that there’s plenty of space to work on larger projects. The Bernina 435 has 7 inches of workspace to the right of the needle. That’s enough space to work on any kind of garment as well as larger quilts, especially when you utilise the extension table that comes standard with this Bernina sewing machine!
Another one of our favourite features of the 435 is how well-lit it is. It is brightly lit with 8 LED lights throughout the body, including under the throat and around the needle so that you can very easily see your work with as few shadows as possible.
