Bernette B38 Sewing Machine Review

First, let’s chat a little bit about the Bernette brand.

They’re budget-friendly Swiss machines. Bernette machines are technically the little sisters of Bernina. They’re made by the same company but are meant to fit your budget just a bit better. But that doesn’t mean they’re lacking in function at all!

These machines are still very well-made and work just as well as other brands. You can still create all of the same things using these machines as you would on any other brand, and they even carry more than just sewing machines. Bernette machines range from sewing machines to overlockers and coverstitch machines to embroidery machines! There’s a Bernette machine for everyone!

The Bernette B38 is truly an amazing machine for its price point. Nothing about this machine can be considered “budget”. It’s actually the top model in its line, the Bernette 30 series. It has a lot of features that you’d find on a luxury sewing machine, but for a fraction of the price of a luxury machine.

It’s computerised, so stitch selection is easy and streamlined. You can easily customise the stitches here, too. You can easily make any stitch as wide as 7mm on the Bernette B38!

The Bernette B38 has 394 stitches programmed into it. This includes eight automatic 1-step buttonhole stitches. There are so many options for you to choose from! You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store when you see how many decorative stitches the B38 has. You can use decorative stitches on quilt labels, cuffs, and really anywhere else that you desire, it adds the perfect amount of flare to any sewing project.

The B38 sews at a moderate pace, so you don’t have to worry about putting the pedal to the metal at full speed. It can sew up to 820 stitches per minute! You’ll be able to sew projects quickly without being worried about holding on to your project.

It even comes with an automatic thread cutter built in! No more will you have to waste thread as you finish a seam, pulling too much thread from the spool and bobbin as you pull the fabric away to trim the thread tails. Instead, you’ll be able to trim the tails with the touch of a button when you finish sewing a seam. You’ll save thread and have to wind your bobbins less frequently, and who wouldn’t love to be able to go longer without winding a bobbin? We know we do!

One of our favourite features of this machine is that it comes with an extension table included! If you’re into quilting or upholstery, you will need an extension table. It helps to support your fabric at the same height as the sewing apparatus so that the heavy fabric doesn’t pull the project away from the needle and causing wonky sewing lines.

Pair it with a walking foot to really get the best quilting experience out of this machine. You’ll be quilting amazing works of art in no time!

You’ll have plenty of workspace even when you’re not using the extension table! The Bernette B38 has 6 inches of working space to the right of the needle. That’s plenty of space to be able to run a medium sized quilt through the final stages of quilting.

While this machine is a full machine that comes with many features, it’s also great for traveling and easily stored! It’s on the smaller side for a sewing machine, but obviously not lacking in sewing space. It’s somewhat lightweight, too. It’s only 8.5kg (or just over 18lbs). If you are looking to travel with this machine, even though it comes with a hard cover, it can be useful to get a carrying case to make lifting it a lot easier!
