PFAFF Quilt Ambition 635 Product Review

The Quilt Ambition 635 combines distinctive styling with an impressive repertoire of creative sewing features for quilters, dressmakers and sewers who want to have fun and create on a sophisticated machine.

The legendary Original IDT™ System from PFAFF acts as a built-in walking foot precisely feeding all types of fabric from the top and bottom for perfect stitching every time. It’s a game changer for sewers working with knit fabrics, quilts or dressmakers working with slippery materials like viscose, chiffon, silk or lace.

There is a spacious workspace to the right of the needle that accommodates quilts, curtain panels and bulky garments while the extra high presser foot lift raises the foot to its highest position for thick fabrics. For free-motion quilting or darning, simply drop the feed dog.

Elevate your creativity with a selection of 201 high-quality stitches and sew unique embellishments stitched perfectly up to 7mm. Choose from two sewing alphabets with both uppercase and lowercase letters for easy programming. With mirror imaging, stitch elongation and the twin needle programme that adjusts width automatically, it gives creative sewers real design flexibility.

Practical conveniences run throughout. The automatic thread cutter snips both threads cleanly at the end of a seam, the semi-automatic needle threader handles the fiddly step in seconds, and the speed slider lets you cap the maximum pace anywhere from careful manoeuvring to steady production. Adjustable foot pressure and automatic thread tension cover the move between silk and denim and the LED-illuminated workspace keeps the needle area shadow-free for accurate work.

Elevate your creativity with a selection of 201 high-quality stitches and sew unique embellishments with stitch widths up to 7mm. Choose from two sewing alphabets with both uppercase and lowercase letters for easy programming.

Other features sewers rate include the sequencing function which enables you to combine and save up to 60 stitches and/or letters to be sewn as many times as you wish. You can also wind the bobbin from the needle so there is no need to rethread. The colour touchscreen is intuitive and displays stitches at actual size.

Inside the PFAFF Quilt Ambition 635

Original IDT™ Integrated Dual Feed

Engaged with a lever behind the presser foot, IDT™ drives fabric from above and below simultaneously. It stays level with the feed dogs to prevent the top layer creeping forward.

Automatic Thread Tension

The machine reads the stitch type you've selected and sets thread tension to match, delivering clean formation on both sides of the fabric without manually adjusting the dial.

Speed Slider and Start/Stop Control

A slider caps the maximum sewing pace, separate from the foot control. The start/stop button runs the machine without the pedal, which is useful for free-motion work and chain piecing.

Twin Needle Programme and Mirror Imaging

Enter the twin needle width and the machine restricts stitch width automatically to protect the needles. Mirror imaging flips stitches horizontally or vertically, doubling the design options available from any pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the IDT™ System different from a walking foot?

A walking foot clips on when you need it and takes up space around the presser foot. IDT™ is built into the machine, engaged by a small lever, and sits flush with the foot you are already using. That means you get even feeding with any compatible foot, not just a dedicated walking foot, and you do not have to swap hardware mid-project.

Is the 635 a good choice if I'm new to quilting?

Yes, particularly if you want to grow into the craft rather than outgrow the machine in a year. The touchscreen and direct selection keys keep the learning curve manageable, and the IDT™ system removes one of the most common sources of frustration for newer quilters: layers shifting out of line during piecing.

Can I sew heavier fabrics like denim and upholstery weight?

The 635 handles a wide range of fabric weights thanks to the adjustable foot pressure and automatic thread tension. For sustained work on the heaviest upholstery fabrics, a dedicated heavy-duty machine is still the better option, but for denim, canvas tote bags and layered home furnishings, this machine has the control you need.

How many stitches per minute does the 635 sew at?

The machine runs up to 800 stitches per minute, with the speed slider letting you cap the maximum pace anywhere below that. This matters more in practice than peak speed alone because controlled slower speeds are what you actually need for detailed work, appliqué and precise piecing.
