PFAFF Ambition 620 Product Review
The PFAFF Ambition 620 is designed for sewers wanting a versatile sewing machine with professional features and superb fabric control. It's well-suited to dressmakers and quilters who want a generous work area and precise fabric handling in a stylish machine that stands out from the crowd.
The legendary Original IDT™ System acts as a built-in walking foot precisely feeding all types of fabric from the top and bottom for perfect stitching every time. It's a game changer for sewers working with knit fabrics, quilts or dressmakers working with slippery materials like viscose, chiffon, silk or lace.
The 136-stitch library covers utility, stretch, decorative and heirloom stitches, paired with 2 alphabets for monogramming and personalisation so you can embellish your work. Stitches can be sewn up to 7mm wide, with mirror and elongation options for extending decorative work into larger patterns. One-step buttonholes deliver consistent results across every garment. Stitch sequencing lets you combine stitches and store your favourites in memory, which means signature combinations are ready when you sit down to sew.
There are plenty of considered and automated features for a fuss-free sewing experience. Automatic Thread Tension sets the optimal needle thread tension for every stitch, so you get balanced stitches on both sides without dialling tension manually. The built-in needle threader makes setup quick and easier on the eyes, the Immediate Tie-Off button secures the end of the seam and Thread Snips trim both top and bobbin threads at the touch of a button. The top-loading bobbin drops in from above, with a smooth thread path for fewer jams.
Other helpful features include a clear LCD screen which displays the active stitch and current settings at a glance. The speed slider gives precise control of your sewing pace. Twenty-nine needle positions let you place stitches accurately, perfect for topstitching, edge stitching, under stitching, stitching-in-the-ditch or quilting. For makers who enjoy free-motion sewing, simply drop the feed teeth for free-motion quilting, thread painting or darning. Needle up/down makes pivoting, appliqué and quilting easier by stopping the needle exactly where you need it.

Materials and Build Quality
PFAFF has been manufacturing precision engineered sewing machines for 160 years. Recognised for clean and consistent stitches, especially on tricky fabrics, they offer an elevated sewing experience and a sleek design with durable and long lasting parts.
The legendary Original IDT™ System from PFAFF acts as a built-in walking foot precisely feeding all types of fabric from the top and bottom for perfect stitching every time. It works with a lever behind the presser foot bar engaging a second set of feed teeth. It's a game changer for sewers working with knit fabrics, quilts or dressmakers working with slippery materials like viscose, chiffon, silk or lace.
A top-loading bobbin drops in under a clear cover, so the thread supply stays visible while you sew. There is no need to rethread when winding your bobbins directly from the needle. Winding stops automatically when your bobbin is full. The built-in needle threader guides thread through the needle eye without the close work usually involved, which reduces eye strain on fine needles and dark thread. Together these systems keep setup straightforward and interruptions short on longer sewing sessions.
The Difference is in the Details
Considered features on the Ambition 620 remove small friction points for an optimal and seamless sewing experience. Sew at up to 800 stitches per minute with a speed slider to adjust the speed for full control. The start/stop button lets you sew without the foot control while the needle up/down stops the needle exactly where you want it, which is handy for appliqué work, tricky corners and detailed topstitching. The automatic tie-off function secures the start and end of a seam so threads stay neat.
PFAFF machines are engineered for lasting performance, with a robust internal design that maintains stitch precision even with regular use. With proper care and servicing, you can rely on consistent, high-quality results for years to come. PFAFF sewing machines come with a 5 year parts and 2 year labour warranty. The Sewing Studio is an authorised service centre for all PFAFF machines.
The Ambition 620's LCD screen displays the active stitch, recommended presser foot and current settings, so you have on-machine guidance at every step. Stitch memory lets you store stitch sequences and combinations, which means your most-used settings are ready when you sit down to sew. Our team at The Sewing Studio is an authorised PFAFF retailer. Call, chat or email for advice before and after purchase.
PFAFF's printed manual covers each stitch and function in detail, so you can work through the machine's full feature set at your own pace. PFAFF sewing machines are designed for user comfort, combining durable technology with artful operation. The bright LCD screen displays your chosen stitch and sewing settings while the Info Button displays helpful tips and recommendations when needed. Optimized bright lights illuminate the entire work area with less shadows. Choose from 13 languages in the Settings menu to make sure your PFAFF® Ambition 620 sewing machine speaks the same language you do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Let us help with the answers.
What is the Original IDT System and why does it matter?
The Original IDT System is PFAFF's Integrated Dual Feed, built into the machine rather than added as a clip-on walking foot. It feeds fabric from above and below at the same time, which keeps layered seams, slippery fabrics and matched plaids moving evenly through the machine. For dressmakers and quilters, this is the feature that prevents the top layer from creeping forward on tricky work.
Is the Ambition 620 suitable for a beginner?
Yes, with some learning. The LCD screen displays the active stitch and recommended presser foot, the automatic needle threader and Auto Snip thread cutter remove two of the most fiddly setup steps, and the speed slider lets you take things slowly while you build confidence. It's a step up from a basic mechanical machine, so intermediate sewers tend to get the most from it.
Can the Ambition 620 handle thick fabrics like denim?
Yes. The Original IDT System and adjustable presser foot pressure help the machine feed evenly through thicker fabrics and layered seams, including denim, corduroy and waistband construction. Using the correct needle for the fabric and stitching at a measured pace gets the best results when working at the heavier end of the range.
What's the difference between Auto Snip and a Manual Thread Cutter?
Auto Snip cuts both the top and bobbin threads at the end of a seam at the touch of a button, leaving short tails on both sides of the fabric. A manual thread cutter on the side of the machine only handles the loose thread between projects. For sewers piecing quilts or making multiple garment sections, Auto Snip saves a notable amount of time and reduces wasted thread.
Does the machine come with everything I need to start sewing?
The 620 ships with 21 accessories including six presser feet, five bobbins, an edge guide, needles, a seam ripper and a hard cover for storage. Everything needed to start sewing across the machine's main stitch and function set is in the box. You will need to source your own thread and fabric for your first project.
Our standard width fabric can be cut as a Fat Quarter, measuring 50cm x 1/2 the width of the bolt. Above is an example of how your fabric will be received, depending on the quantity ordered.
We also offer a sample service, where you can order 1 single fat quarter of any standard width fabric, to have at home and compare colours. When you are finished, you can send them back to us for a refund (feel free to contact us for more information on this service).
Our fabric can be cut as a Long Quarter, measuring a minimum of 25cm x width of bolt. We will supply the fabric as a continuous length (eg; if you bought 1.25m it will be sent as one piece of fabric).
