“Very efficient and professional.”

Janome HD9 QC Professional Product Review
The Janome HD9 QC Professional is a straight stitch machine designed to meet the needs of sewers and quilters who want industrial pace at home. It sews at up to 1,650 stitches per minute and does one job: straight stitching with power and control.
The HD9 QC features a side-loading jumbo bobbin that holds 1.4x more thread than a standard bobbin, reducing interruptions during long seams. Bobbin winding runs on its own motor at up to 3,000 rpm, so you can fill a bobbin while the machine stays threaded and ready to sew.
The Heavy Weight Thread Guide (HWTG) stabilises tension when using thicker threads, allowing clean top-stitching on denim, canvas, leather and layered materials.
For quilters, the Floating Function reduces drag and stops layers from shifting when you work across wadding, knits or velvet. The feed dogs drop by lever for free-motion work and the convertible free-motion quilting foot set supplied with the machine changes between open and closed toe, so you can switch between free-motion styles without buying extra feet.
The HD9 QC Professional comes with generous accessories for quilting, including a large foot controller, extra-wide extension table, convertible free-motion quilting foot (QC2), ditch-quilting foot, ¼" seam foot, even-feed foot and multiple industrial HLx5 needles making it ready for high-performance sewing straight out of the box.
Presser foot pressure adjusts up to 11 lbs, which means the foot holds heavy or layered material down rather than letting it lift with the needle and the extra-high presser foot lift gives you room to get bulky work underneath in the first place. Maximum stitch length is 6mm, forward and in reverse.
The workspace measures 9 inches to the right of the needle and 5.9 inches high and the extra-wide extension table included with the machine widens the flat surface further, which means a full-size quilt is supported while you work. Comfort and efficiency features include an automatic thread cutter (with quieter operation), memorised needle up/down, speed control slider, independent bobbin-winder motor, extra-high presser foot lift, LED dimming control and an openable face cover for easy cleaning.

Materials and Build Quality
The HD9 QC Professional has a solid metal chassis and a painted aluminium body. At 14.5kg it stays stable at full speed for absolute stitching accuracy. HANENITE rubber feet sit under the base to absorb the vibration that is left, so the machine holds its position on the table through long sessions.
Eight sealed ball bearings support the main shaft, helping it rotate smoothly while reducing friction and wear. Enclosed bearings keep their lubrication in and dust out, which means the machine runs quietly and smoothly at high speed. Janome cite this construction as the reason for that smoothness.
The hook is a vertical full rotary type taken from industrial practice, turning continuously in one direction rather than oscillating back and forth. Continuous rotation forms every stitch at the same point in the cycle, which is why stitch formation stays consistent whether you are crossing a bulky quilt block join or feeding fine cotton. The hook is paired with large metal bobbins, which are supplied in a set of five with the machine.
The Difference Is in the Details
Finishing a seam takes one button on the HD9 QC Professional. The automatic thread cutter has been redesigned to run more quietly than the previous version and a port on the machine takes an optional remote thread cutter switch if you would rather keep both hands on the work. Needle up or down is memorised, the automatic needle stop holds the position you set and the speed control slider caps the top speed when accuracy matters more than pace.
The robust construction is engineered for sustained, everyday performance on heavier fabrics, providing the durability and stability required for demanding workloads. The HD9 QC has an industrial needle system precisely matched to the machine’s operating speeds and fabric capabilities, creating a fully integrated system designed for consistent, professional-level performance. This is not simply a domestic machine adapted for heavier use.
The HD9 QC has been engineered for a smooth sewing experience. The knee lifter raises the presser foot without taking your hands off the fabric. LED brightness is adjustable by a dimming control, so you can match the light to your room rather than working under a fixed level. The built-in needle threader removes the fiddly part of setting up and the face plate opens for lint removal without tools.
Janome HD9 QC Professional: A Machine for Every Maker
And every project
Quilting at Full Size
Piecing and quilting a full-size quilt is where this machine is at its most comfortable. Long straight quilting lines with minimum interruptions and layers that stay where you put them from the first seam to the binding. The quilting itself is done on the same machine rather than sent out, which means the whole quilt is finished under one needle.
Bag Making and Leatherwork
The HD9 QC confidently handles leather, canvas and heavy ripstop fabrics with powerful needle penetration and flexible presser foot adjustment. The Heavy Weight Thread Guide (HWTG) stabilises tension when using thicker threads, allowing clean top-stitching on denim, canvas, leather and layered materials. It can easily accommodate straps, base panels and gusset seams.
Home Furnishing and Repeat Sewing
Curtains, blinds and cushion covers mean long seams in heavy fabric and a lot of repetition and this is where home furnishing work becomes production work. For anyone sewing to sell, this is a machine that stands up to business use rather than occasional projects and the pace makes short work of repeat runs.
Inside the Janome HD9 QC Professional
Heavy Weight Thread Guide (HWTG)
An additional guide on the upper thread path that holds thicker threads steady before the tension discs, keeping top-stitching even when standard guides would let heavy thread wander.
Floating Function
A dial that lifts the presser foot a fraction above the feed dogs, so layered work slides rather than compresses. Adjustable through a 0 to 3mm range.
Side-Loading Jumbo Bobbin
Loaded from the side rather than the top, so the bobbin can be changed with the extension table fitted and a large quilt still under the needle.
Industrial Pre-Tension Threading
A pre-tension stage sets thread resistance before the main discs, which stops fine threads snapping and heavy threads running loose at full speed.
HLx5 Needle System
Industrial HLx5 needles in sizes 9 to 16, specified by Janome for high speed straight stitching and chosen to resist deflection through leather, webbing and layered denim.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this machine only sew a straight stitch?
Everything in the HD9 QC Professional is committed to doing one stitch quickly and evenly, which is why there are no decorative stitches, no zigzag and no buttonholes. If you need buttonholes and stitch variety, this works best as a second machine alongside a computerised one rather than as your only machine.
Is the HD9 QC Professional suitable for a beginner?
It can be used by a beginner, but it is not the obvious first machine. There is no automatic tension and no on-screen guidance, so you set the machine up yourself and 1,650 stitches per minute takes some getting used to. It is more often chosen as a second machine by sewers who already have a general purpose machine.
Can it sew leather and multiple layers of canvas?
Yes. Match the needle size to the material and set the presser foot pressure to suit and the machine handles leather, canvas, webbing and layered denim. For thicker top-stitching thread, thread through the Heavy Weight Thread Guide.
Do I need to buy anything extra to start quilting?
No. The quilting feet, extension table, metal bobbins and needle set are all in the box and the full list is in the Included Accessories section above. The optional remote thread cutter switch is available separately if you would rather keep both hands on the work.
Will it fit in a sewing cabinet?
At 19.5 inches wide and 14.5kg it is larger and heavier than a standard domestic machine, so check your cabinet aperture before ordering. Chat with one of our machine experts online or contact us with your cabinet model and we will check whether it takes the HD9 QC Professional.
Our standard width fabric can be cut as a Fat Quarter, measuring 50cm x 1/2 the width of the bolt. Above is an example of how your fabric will be received, depending on the quantity ordered.
We also offer a sample service, where you can order 1 single fat quarter of any standard width fabric, to have at home and compare colours. When you are finished, you can send them back to us for a refund (feel free to contact us for more information on this service).
Our fabric can be cut as a Long Quarter, measuring a minimum of 25cm x width of bolt. We will supply the fabric as a continuous length (eg; if you bought 1.25m it will be sent as one piece of fabric).
