Janome Atelier 9 Product Review & Demonstration

The Janome Atelier 9 is the flagship model in the Atelier range, a fully computerised sewing and embroidery machine built for quilters, dressmakers and makers who want precision across both disciplines. The AcuFeed Flex system feeds fabric simultaneously from top and bottom, which means consistent results on thick quilts, canvas, denim and other challenging materials that cause a standard presser foot to shift or drag. The 7-piece Superior Feed System works alongside AcuFeed Flex to keep fabric moving evenly throughout a seam.

The embroidery unit mounts to the back of the machine rather than extending to the left of the needle. This keeps the machine's footprint compact and, crucially, means the free arm remains accessible even when embroidery is in progress. The 170 x 200mm embroidery area is large enough for jacket backs, cushion fronts and substantial monogram work. With 250 stunning built-in designs, 10 monogramming fonts and a colour touchscreen for editing and positioning, the Atelier 9 covers the full range of embroidery work from personalised labels through to large decorative panels. Ambitious sewers will appreciate the advanced features such as Embroidery Couching, Variable Zig Zag, Jump Thread Trimming and more.

Wi-Fi connectivity allows you to send designs wirelessly from a tablet or computer directly to the machine, removing the need to transfer files via USB each time. Three dedicated Janome apps, AcuEdit, AcuMonitor and AcuSetter, extend what you can do away from the machine: edit designs, monitor stitch progress and adjust settings remotely. Automatic jump thread trimming cuts jump threads as the machine embroiders, so you spend less time finishing by hand and more time on the creative work.

On the sewing side, the Atelier 9 is a joy to sew with. Enjoy 300 built-in stitches, a 9mm maximum stitch width for bold decorative results and the Stitch Tapering function, a first for the Atelier range, which tapers the start and end of a stitch sequence for a clean, finished appearance. There are an unbelievable 91 needle positions for incredibly fine adjustments and precision.

Experience legendary Janome quality and innovation, all in one beautifully engineered machine.

The Difference is in the Details

Janome Atelier 9: A Machine for Every Maker

And every project

Ideal for Quilters Who Want to Add Embroidery

The large embroidery area and AcuFeed Flex make the Atelier 9 a practical choice for quilters adding stunning embroidery embellishments, personalised labels and monograms to finished work, without needing a separate dedicated embroidery machine.

Precision on Difficult Fabrics

AcuFeed Flex feeds thick quilts, canvas and denim evenly from top and bottom, so long seams on bulky or tricky materials stay straight and consistent from start to finish.

A Stitch Library That Grows with You

The combination of a large built-in stitch library, custom composition tools and sequence tapering means your creative options expand the more time you spend with the machine.

Inside the Janome Atelier 9

AcuFeed Flex Dual Feed System

A removable dual feed system that pairs with the 7-piece Superior Feed System to feed the top and bottom layers of fabric simultaneously, with tool-free needle plate switching.

Compact Embroidery Unit and Wi-Fi Design Transfer

The embroidery unit mounts to the back of the machine, keeping the free arm accessible during embroidery work. Wi-Fi connectivity connects to the AcuEdit, AcuMonitor and AcuSetter apps to manage and track designs remotely.

Stitch Memory and Stitch Tapering Function

Combine stitch patterns and save to the machine's memory directly on the touchscreen. The Stitch Tapering function tapers the start and end of a sequence automatically for a clean, finished result.

Automatic Jump Thread Trimming and Cutwork

Jump threads are cut continuously as the machine embroiders, with no mid-design stops required. The built-in cutwork function displays imported designs with correct needle guidance and adjusts thread sensor settings automatically.

Bobbin System and Thread Sensing

The top-loading easy-set bobbin uses a horizontal rotary hook for consistent stitch formation. The bobbin thread sensor has adjustable sensitivity to suit large embroidery runs or short seams across different thread weights.

Ratings & Reviews

Frequently Asked Questions

Let us help with the answers.

What is the difference between the Atelier 9 and a standalone embroidery machine?

The Atelier 9 combines full sewing and embroidery capability in one machine, which means you can piece a quilt, sew garments and embroider designs without switching between separate machines. The compact embroidery unit mounts to the back rather than extending to the left of the needle, so the machine's sewing footprint stays the same whether the embroidery unit is attached or not.

Can the Atelier 9 handle thick fabrics like denim and canvas?

Yes. The AcuFeed Flex dual feed system feeds fabric from both the top and the bottom simultaneously, which prevents the top layer from lagging on thick or layered materials. Bag makers, quilters working with wadded layers and anyone sewing with canvas or heavy denim will find the AcuFeed Flex system handles these fabrics with consistent results.

How does Wi-Fi design transfer work?

The Atelier 9 connects to your home Wi-Fi network. Once connected, you can send embroidery designs wirelessly from a phone, tablet or computer to the machine using the Janome AcuEdit app, removing the need to save files to a USB stick and transfer them manually each time.

What size embroidery projects can the Atelier 9 handle?

The maximum embroidery area is 170 x 200mm using the large RE20a hoop, which is large enough for jacket backs, cushion fronts and full monogram panels. The SQ14a hoop (140 x 140mm) suits square motifs and badges, while the FA10a (100 x 40mm) is suited to narrow border work, labels and sleeve bands.

Do I need to stop mid-design to trim jump threads?

No. Automatic jump thread trimming cuts jump threads as the machine embroiders, so the design runs continuously without you needing to pause, trim and restart. This is particularly useful on designs with multiple colour changes or dense fill areas that produce a high volume of jump threads.

Can I create my own embroidery and stitch designs on the machine?

The Stitch Composer lets you build and save custom stitch combinations directly on the touchscreen. For embroidery, the AcuEdit app allows you to create and edit designs on a connected device before sending them to the machine over Wi-Fi. Finished designs are stored in the machine's 4MB built-in memory and available to use again on future projects.
