baby lock Gloria Product Review

The baby lock Gloria is a coverlock machine built for serious dressmakers and garment sewers who want a premium combination overlocker and coverstitch machine. At 13kg, it’s designed for sustained use rather than occasional sessions - combining the power of an industrial machine with the comfort and ease of home use. Whether you’re a fashion designer, quilter or serious hobbyist, Gloria gives you the tools to produce flawless seams, decorative finishes and handle large projects with ease.

The ExtraordinAir™ & RevolutionAir™ air-jet threading system for loopers and needles sets the Gloria apart. A jet of air threads both loopers and needles at the touch of a button, in any order, which means rethreading mid-project or swapping to a different thread type takes seconds rather than minutes. The built-in needle threader completes the process without manual fiddling at the needle eye.

Automatic Thread Delivery (ATD) removes the need to manually adjust thread tension. Three sensors read stitch width, stitch length and fabric thickness continuously while you sew, keeping stitch formation balanced as you move between fabric weights or stitch types. The only tension dials that can be manually adjusted are the chain/cover stitch looper and needle tension dials, which are there for fine-tuning on unusual thread-and-fabric combinations.

With 2 to 8 threads in play, the Gloria produces 87 stitch combinations covering overlock, flatlock, rolled hem, chain stitch, cover stitch, triple cover stitch and the exclusive baby lock Wave Stitch. Decorative combination stitches can be sewn up to 16mm wide. The wide throat space gives you room to handle larger garments and home sewing projects without having to bunch fabric or reposition constantly. Six LED lights illuminate the work area, and the variable speed slider lets you slow the machine right down for detailed work without losing power through thick or layered fabric.

Materials and Build Quality

Build and Construction

Gloria is a solid and robust machine designed to sit firmly on a workbench through continuous use. The industrial-style looper system gives the loopers the mechanical reliability to handle not just standard sewing threads but textured yarns and specialty threads as well - anything that fits through the looper can be used. The wide throat space is achieved through the machine’s full-sized footprint, giving you genuine room to move large volumes of fabric through without forcing it.

The four built-in safety switches are part of the machine’s design rather than an afterthought: the Gloria will not start sewing with the side cover open, front cover open, presser foot raised or needle threader engaged. A magnetic needle catch tray collects needles during changes. The presser foot lifter is positioned on the side of the machine, keeping the workspace in front of the needle clear. Accessory storage is built into the machine body, under the thread spool holder, keeping tools within reach during sewing.

Build and Construction
Automatic Thread Delivery (ATD) System

The ATD system reads three variables continuously: stitch width, stitch length and fabric thickness. Each sensor feeds information to the thread delivery mechanism so that tension stays consistent as conditions change - moving from a single layer of jersey to a doubled seam allowance, for example, or switching stitch type. The two manual tension dials allow fine-tuning on thread-and-fabric combinations that fall outside the ATD system’s automatic range.

Automatic Thread Delivery (ATD) System
Stitch Width and Length Adjustment

On the Gloria, the stitch width cutter and the chaining finger move together when you adjust the stitch width dial. This means it is the actual seam width that changes, not just the cutting width as on conventional machines, which prevents overcutting and undercutting. The same stitch length dial also controls the rolled hem setting - turn it to the rolled hem position and the stitch finger drops automatically, with no additional adjustment needed. Stitch length adjusts from 0.75mm to 4mm.

Stitch Width and Length Adjustment

The Difference is in the Details

Productivity & Speed

At 1,500 stitches per minute, the Gloria moves through garment work at pace. The variable speed slider sets the maximum speed ceiling, so you can run at full speed on straight runs and slow right down for curved seams or detailed sections. The knee lift keeps both hands on the fabric when repositioning, and the automatic chain-off function on cover stitch means you can start and stop cover stitching without the manual tail handling that most machines require.

Productivity & Speed
Built for Longevity

The industrial-style looper system handles years of regular use without the precision degrading. Its full-sized body keeps the machine stable under load rather than shifting across the table at high speeds. baby lock backs the Gloria with a 2-year warranty as standard, with a further 2 years available on registration.

Learning Resources

The Gloria comes with a quick reference threading guide and RevolutionAir™ needle threading guide in the box, covering setup for all eight threads. Our YouTube channel carries additional tutorials to help you work through the machine’s full stitch range and get consistent results from the ATD system across different fabric types.

Learning Resources
Comfort & Ease of Use

The knee lift handles presser foot operation hands-free, which means your hands stay on the fabric for complete control on detailed work. The side-mounted presser foot lifter keeps the area in front of the needle unobstructed. Six LED lights illuminate the work area so thread colours and seam lines are clearly visible. The adjustable presser foot pressure dial lets you set the right amount of foot pressure for fine fabrics, firm wovens or heavier materials without guesswork.

Comfort & Ease of Use

baby lock Gloria: A Machine for Every Maker

And every project

One Machine, Every Seam Finish

Moving from a seam allowance finish to a T-shirt neckline hem no longer means switching machines or managing two separate setups.

Professional Garment Finishing at Home

Hems on the Gloria match the finish of shop-bought knitwear and jersey garments, so the difference between handmade and professional is no longer visible.

Decorative Work Beyond the Standard Stitch

The exclusive Wave Stitch and reverse Wave Stitch, along with combination stitches up to 16mm wide and flatlock options, give you decorative seam and edge finishing that goes well beyond what a standard overlocker can produce.

Inside the baby lock Gloria Coverlock Machine

ExtraordinAir™ & RevolutionAir™ Threading System

A jet of air threads all three loopers and the needle eyes at the press of a button, in any order, in seconds. Insert the thread into the port, press the button and the air carries it through the tubular looper channel to the correct position. You can thread in any order, and changing one thread does not require re-threading the others. The built-in air-assisted needle threader completes the process without manual fiddling at the needle eye.

Automatic Thread Delivery and Stitch Sensing

Three sensors continuously monitor stitch width, stitch length and fabric thickness while you sew. The ATD system feeds this information to the thread delivery mechanism, keeping tension balanced across all fabric types without manual input. The two manual tension dials - for the chain/cover stitch looper and needle - are available for fine-tuning on unusual thread-and-fabric combinations, but most sewers will rarely need to touch them.

87 Stitch Combinations and Wave Stitch

Two to 8 threads produce 87 stitch combinations, including overlock (2, 3 and 4 thread), flatlock, rolled hem, chain stitch, cover stitch, triple cover stitch and the baby lock exclusive Wave Stitch. The Wave Stitch creates a decorative wavy edge stitch through a dedicated thread delivery unit that keeps each wave even across the full seam length. Decorative combination stitches can be sewn up to 16mm wide.

Differential Feed and Fabric Handling

Differential feed adjusts from 0.6:1 to 2.0:1, giving you control over stretch or gather on knits and jersey fabrics. The adjustable presser foot pressure dial lets you set the right amount of foot pressure for fine fabrics through to heavy materials. The variable speed slider lets you slow the machine right down while keeping full motor power, which is particularly useful on thick seam allowances or layered hems.

Safety System and Workspace

Four built-in safety switches prevent the machine from starting with the side cover open, front cover open, presser foot raised or needle threader engaged. A magnetic needle catch tray collects needles during changes. Six LED lights illuminate the work area, and the side-mounted presser foot lifter keeps the area in front of the needle unobstructed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Coverlock Machine and how is the Gloria different to a standard Overlocker?

A coverlock machine combines two functions in one unit: overlocking, which trims and finishes seam allowances, and cover stitching, which produces the professional hem finish seen on knitwear and jersey garments. A standard overlocker only does the first. The Gloria handles both, along with chain stitch and combination stitches that join an overlock and cover stitch in a single pass, which means you get a full range of garment-construction finishes without needing two separate machines.

How do the ExtraordinAir™ & RevolutionAir™ Threading Systems work?

Each looper has a dedicated threading port. Insert the thread, press the button and a jet of air carries it through the tubular looper channel to the correct position. The needles work the same way via a separate button. You can thread in any order, and changing one thread does not require re-threading the others. The whole machine can be ready to sew in a matter of seconds rather than the several minutes that manual looper threading typically takes.

Do I need to adjust thread tension on the Gloria?

For the vast majority of sewing, no. The ATD system handles tension automatically by reading stitch width, stitch length and fabric thickness as you sew. The two manual tension dials - for the chain/cover stitch looper and needle - are available for fine-tuning on unusual thread-and-fabric combinations, but most sewers will rarely need to touch them.

Can the Gloria sew through heavy or layered fabrics?

Yes. The variable speed slider lets you slow the machine right down while keeping full motor power available, which is particularly useful on thick seam allowances or layered hems. The presser foot pressure dial adjusts to suit the fabric weight, and the industrial-style looper system provides consistent stitch formation through heavier materials. The knife system has a larger cutting bite than standard machines, giving it more capacity on thicker fabrics.

What is the Wave Stitch and how do I use It?

The Wave Stitch is a baby lock exclusive, not available on other brands. It creates a decorative wavy edge stitch, produced through a dedicated thread delivery unit that keeps each wave even across the full seam length. The reverse Wave Stitch works in the opposite direction. Both are selected through the stitch selector in the same way as any other stitch on the machine, and the ATD system manages the thread delivery so you do not need to set tension separately.

How do I switch between Overlock and Cover Stitch modes?

Mode switching is done via the WAVE/OVERLOCK lever on the machine. The number of steps required is fewer than on earlier generation combination machines. The stitch selector positions A, B, C and D cover the full range of overlock and cover stitch options, and the machine includes a quick reference guide in the box to show which position corresponds to which stitch type.
