Embroidery Design Not Aligning - How to Fix It
If your embroidery design isn't stitching out where it should, or layers of the design aren't lining up with each other, it's a frustrating problem - especially on multi-colour designs where each colour needs to sit precisely in relation to the others. The good news is it's almost always down to hooping or stabiliser and is usually straightforward to fix.
Work through these steps in order
Start at step 1 and work your way down - most alignment problems come down to hooping or stabiliser.
Check the hoop
Movement in the hoop is the most common cause. If the fabric shifts at any point during the design, everything that stitches after that point will be out of position.
- Re-hoop firmly, making sure the fabric is taut and there is no give at all
- Check the hoop is attached securely to the machine arm and isn't shifting during stitching
- The fabric should feel like a drum - taut and flat with no loose areas
Check your stabiliser
Insufficient stabiliser allows the fabric to shift during stitching, which causes parts of the design to end up in the wrong position.
- Make sure your stabiliser is appropriate for the fabric type and the density of the design
- For designs with multiple colour stops this is especially important - the stabiliser needs to hold the fabric completely still throughout the entire design
- If in doubt, add an extra layer of stabiliser and test on scrap before returning to your project
Don't remove the hoop between colour changes
This is a common mistake that causes immediate misalignment. Even the tiniest difference in position when replacing the hoop will throw the design off.
- Never remove the hoop from the machine between colour changes unless your machine specifically instructs you to
- Change the thread with the hoop still attached and in position on the machine
Check the design file
If the design isn't aligning correctly across multiple attempts with good hooping and stabiliser, the problem may be in the design file itself rather than your setup.
- Try a different design to see if the problem persists - if it doesn't, the original design file may need to be re-digitised
- If you digitised the design yourself, check the stitch sequence and colour order in your software
Check machine calibration
If alignment problems are happening consistently across multiple different designs and good hooping isn't fixing it, the machine itself may need attention.
- Check your manual for any calibration or alignment procedure for your specific model
- If the machine is out of calibration it will need a service - get in touch and we can advise
Test on scrap fabric
Before returning to your project, run the full design on scrap fabric of the same type with the same stabiliser. Check that all parts of the design are sitting where they should before committing to your actual piece.
