Janome 9300DX Overlocker Review
It’s time to consider purchasing an overlock machine!
Are you getting into creating more and more garments and you want that professionally finished look? Is your sewing machine not cutting it anymore?
Here at The Sewing Studio, we want to make sure you find the right machine for you, your current skills, and how you want to hone them. Each machine offers something slightly different, so it’s important to take a look at every detail before you decide which machine you want to bring home.
We understand that a new sewing machine of any kind is a big investment, so we want to make sure you’re getting all the necessary information before you spend the money!
“But why should I consider getting an Overlock Machine? Isn’t there a way to get this look out of my sewing machine?”
Janome overlockers help with a few crucial steps when making garments that look and feel professionally tailored that regular sewing machines just can’t do. It can do more than just hems! Overlock machines overcast stitches over a seam, trimming the fabric as it goes for a perfect seam that lays just right and won’t come undone.
Not only is this great for garment sewing but will help you create lasting seams on any project! Overlock the edge of your needle point projects to keep your Aida cloth and linen from fraying as you work. Make sturdy seams in any bag you sew so they can last longer. It seems that overlock machines are only meant for one thing, but that’s not the case by any means!
Of course, we know the idea of a machine cutting away fabric while sewing is… scary to say the least. You can’t always undo mistakes on an overlocker, so you really must be sure of your measurements and confident in your abilities, and practice makes perfect! It helps to practice on scrap fabric, including scraps of knit and any other fabric types you’ll be using regularly. Once you get the hang of using overlockers you’ll never want to go back to finishing your seams on a regular sewing machine again!
The Janome Overlock 9300DX itself is a great beginner overlocking machine that won’t disappoint! It’s on the lower end of the price spectrum, making it great for someone who wants to try it out before committing to a more expensive machine that comes with a few more bells and whistles. But that doesn’t mean that the 9300DX is a “cheap” machine that’s difficult to use. Inexpensive machines don’t have to be frustrating to use! The Janome Overlock 9300DX is affordable and will have you finishing your garments off professionally in no time!
It’s a compact machine, too, making it easy to store when not in use, and easy to travel with. If you’re going on a retreat or need to fit a garment to someone you need to travel to, this machine is perfect for that! It weighs in only at 5 to 8kg, making it easy to carry.
Even though the Janome Overlock 9300DX is considered a basic overlocker, that doesn’t mean that you’re limited in what you can do with this machine. There are many features that allow you to customise your sewing experience.
This overlocker features a two-needle system that supports 3 to 4 threads, giving you plenty of options to work with, including the ability to customise other working parts of the machine.
The 9300DX also has an adjustable cutting width to create seams from 2.0mm to 5.7mm with the option to retract the upper knife to create seams without cutting fabric away. The stitch length can be customised from 1mm to 4mm, too. It’s important to be able to change these features in order to get the best outcomes for whatever projects you work on. Some seams may need to be more delicate with smaller stitches, like on rayon fabric, or you might want to make something extra sturdy with an added thread to keep any easily frayed fabrics in check.
Threading this machine isn’t as tedious as threading other overlockers. The lay-in threading system makes it easier to see where the threads are supposed to go. It’s also color coded to help you make sure that your threads are in the correct places and not crisscrossed! Overlockers are notorious for being difficult to thread, especially through the bottom loopers, but with the Janome 9300DX only requires a small learning curve to really get the hang of threading it!
The 9300DX can stitch up to 1,500 SPM! That’s one fast overlocker! While that can seem intimidating, it’s actually a really great feature, even for beginners. Sometimes working slowly can create more issues with second guessing and can allow your fabric to travel when you don’t want it to. Sewing quickly, as long as you’re comfortable, allows you to sew with confidence and keep a better hand on your fabric.
