Janome Atelier 3 Sewing Machine Review

Intermediate Sewists Rejoice!

Janome sewing machines are truly some of the best machines in the sewing industry. They’re well-made and affordable while also offering amazing features even on machines considered the lower-end of the price range.

When choosing sewing machines you’ll want to consider everything you need now, but also everything you’ll need in a machine once you hone your sewing skills. A sewing machine is an investment and sewing on a machine that doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles you’ll need in the next five to ten years may have you going back to the dealer to purchase another sooner than you’d like or can afford.

If you’re looking for something more on the basic side, without too many bells and whistles but still has a plethora of features that can be used for many different project types and sewing styles. Just because it’s on the inexpensive end of the line doesn’t mean it’s lacking in any features of a great sewing machine.

Janome Atelier 3

The Janome Atelier 3 is the first in the Atelier series. It’s a machine that is easy to learn on for beginners but has features that anyone can grow into as they learn to sew and try their hand at more project types and hone their skills.

This machine is amazing, especially for its price range. The Atelier 3 features many higher-end elements, like a start/stop button, a plethora of decorative stitches, and an amazing feed system that will move your fabric evenly through the machine as you sew.

The Atelier 3 features a 7-piece feed system that feeds your fabrics through with precision. You can also purchase a walking foot for added accuracy. This system grips any fabric you’re working with well without snagging and resists bobbin nesting in order to keep your sewing machine running smoothly.
Its 7mm maximum stitch width gives you more room to customise your sewing preferences and projects. This feature allows the machine up to 71 needle positions!

Janome Atelier 3

The Atelier 3 has an amazing working space to work on larger projects with ease. You’ll find 210mm of working space to the right of the needle (over 8 inches), really allows you to fit larger quilts and garments through the machine.

This machine is computerised. Choosing your stitches, setting tension, and changing stitch length and width are all easily done with the simple touch of a button- that means no more guessing if the dials are in the right place! Being able to change any of these elements with simple buttons that are labeled and easy to read makes this machine much less intimidating to use than a manual machine.

This Janome model has 120 different stitches to work with, including 7 different buttonholes. From a special 1/4inch seam setting to match the foot that comes standard with the machine, to applique stitches, this machine is perfect for all your standard quilting skills. There are many stitches already programmed in for garments, too.

Atelier 3 LED Lighting

This machine also has 4 built-in LED Lights for optimal clarity while sewing. They’re positioned in a way that won’t blind the user, as LED lights put off a very clear, very bright light, but will illuminate the sewing projects and allow the sewist to see every detail as they work.

Superior Needle Threader is featured on every Atelier machine, including the Atelier 3. This needle threader is easy to use, no matter your finger dexterity or eyesight, only requiring one hand to use.

What kind of projects are best made on the Atelier 3?

We would recommend the Atelier 3 to any novice to intermediate quilter or seamstress. While it is a very well-rounded machine, it doesn’t offer the speed or accessories needed to make intricate projects like quilted bags with multiple zippers and pockets.

This machine is perfect for quilters who are looking to piece all kinds of tops as well as quilt basic patterns on baby sized to about twin sized quilts, if not bigger! Free motion quilting is possible, too, giving you more options to create the project in your mind’s eye.

While the Atelier 3 does not have embroidery, it does feature a good amount of decorative stitches to customise projects with your own labels and tags, including alphabet stitches to sign your name and date of creation.
