How to border your quilts

Have you ever had to put a join in your border fabric?

Can't figure out how to make it look aesthetically ok? Well Katrina shows us how you can make a feature of your joined boarders.

This technique works if you need more than one width of fabric for a border or if you've just got some odd pieces and you haven't quite got enough.

How To...

First thing you're going to need is your chosen fabric for the fillet, it's recommended that you use a contrasting colour.

Cut your fabric into a one-inch strip and then fold it in half with the wrong sides together.

Measuring the width of your boarder, cut the fillet the same width.

Lay the piece of fabric/fillet onto your fabric – make sure the fold is going towards the center and the opening/raw edge is facing outwards.

Then machine it in place using a scant seam (approx. eighth of an inch) just to hold it in place.

Thinner than normal because it's going to get hidden into the seam.

Then put another fillet on the other side and repeat the process.

Cut the fillets off, so they’re level. (Optional: Do this with a rotary cutter.)

With your other 2 pieces of fabric which will make up the boarder. Place your smaller stitched fabric (with the fillet) in-between the other two other pieces of fabric to make the border. Then sew them, right sides together.

When sewing, use a quarter of an inch seam this time.

Your fillet should be sandwiched together.

Repeat on the other side until you have successfully extended the fabric.

The trick with this is when you come to put your border on the on your quilt you want your fillet feature to be slightly offset – don't have them in the dead center of the quilt. It's not as pleasing to the eye, it's much better to have them slightly offset. Katrina measured the distance from the edge of the quilt to the first one but they are all offset.
