Husqvarna Opal 690Q Product Review

The Husqvarna Opal 690Q is a computerised sewing and quilting machine designed and engineered in Sweden. It sits at the upper end of the Opal range and is built for quilters and confident sewers who appreciate precise fabric control, consistent stitch quality and a generous workspace. The Husqvarna Viking Opal 690Q rewards anyone who has outgrown a basic machine and wants meaningful automation on every project.

It has 208 built-in stitches including utility, quilt and decorative, plus 4 programmable alphabets, with a 7mm maximum stitch width and 6mm stitch length for bold decorative work. Seven buttonhole styles plus an eyelet cover, everyday and specialist applications, sewn by the Sensor One-Step Buttonhole Foot for evenly balanced results. The Tapering function automatically reduces stitch width to a perfect point for mitred corners and satin-stitch lettering, which is particularly useful for personalising garments and making banners.

The 8-inch (200mm) sewing surface and long arm give you room for full-size quilts, curtains and home furnishings without folding fabric awkwardly under the head. The top-loading bobbin sits behind a clear cover so you can monitor thread levels, and the Bobbin Thread Sensor stops the machine before the bobbin runs dry. Electronic Self-Adjusting Thread Tension sets the right tension for each stitch and fabric, while the automatic thread cutter, built-in needle threader, start/stop button and 5 speed settings keep your workflow moving.

The 3-inch monochrome touchscreen is straightforward to navigate with the included stylus, displaying stitches in real size with recommended foot, needle size, tension and presser foot pressure. The SEWING ADVISOR® feature sets stitch type, length, width, tension and speed once you tell it your fabric and technique, and the My Stitches menu stores up to 240 saved stitches across 12 memories. Three LED lights illuminate the needle area without shadows, and the machine drops feed teeth for free-motion quilting at the press of a button.

The difference is in the details

Husqvarna Opal 690Q: A Machine for Every Maker

And every project

Free-Motion Quilting

For passionate free-motion quilters, the SENSOR SYSTEM adjusts foot pressure as quilt thickness varies helping layers feed smoothly while reducing puckering and uneven stitches. The Opal 690Q is also ideal for stippling, meandering and custom quilting. The 8-inch workspace provides ample space for larger quilts and the embroidery/darning foot is included so you can begin free-motion work straight out of the box.

Precision Garment Construction

Dressmakers will appreciate the SEWING ADVISOR® feature, which sets up the machine for the fabric you are working with from fine silk through to heavyweight denim. Meanwhile, the SENSOR SYSTEM automatically adjusts presser foot pressure as fabric thickness changes, helping lightweight fabrics, stretch materials and layered seams feed smoothly for more professional-looking results.

29 needle positions support exact topstitching, edge stitching and stitch-in-the-ditch and the Tapering feature creates perfectly mitred corners on collars, cuffs and decorative trim.

Personalisation and Decorative Detail

Four programmable alphabets, upper and lower case, let you label, date and personalise quilts, garments and gifts directly from the touchscreen. Save up to 240 stitches and letter combinations across 12 memories, and the My Stitches menu calls them back instantly so your most-used patterns and lettering are always one tap away.

Inside the Husqvarna Opal 690Q

EXCLUSIVE SENSOR SYSTEM™

Continuously senses fabric thickness as you sew and adjusts presser foot pressure for perfect even feeding. The Sensor Foot Lift offers four positions: down, pivot, up and extra lift, with feed teeth lowering automatically.

SEWING ADVISOR®

Select your fabric type and sewing technique, and SEWING ADVISOR® instantly sets the best stitch, width, length, thread tension, presser foot pressure and recommended needle. Settings appear on the touchscreen.

Bobbin Thread Sensor and Self-Adjusting Tension

The Bobbin Thread Sensor stops sewing and alerts you before bobbin thread runs out, and the Electronic Self-Adjusting Thread Tension calibrates optimal tension for every stitch and fabric combination automatically.

Perfectly Balanced Buttonholes

The Sensor One-Step Buttonhole Foot sews both sides of the buttonhole in the same direction for evenly balanced results, with seven buttonhole styles plus an eyelet across all fabric weights.

My Stitches Memory and Tapering

12 permanent memories store up to 240 stitches or letters across the My Stitches menu, and the Tapering feature reduces stitch width to a perfect point for mitred corners.

Ratings & Reviews

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Husqvarna Opal 690Q a good choice for Free-Motion Quilting?

Yes, this is one of the machine's strengths. Feed teeth drop at the press of a button, electronic speed control lets you slow the machine right down, and the embroidery/darning foot is included. Combined with the 8-inch workspace, you have everything you need for stippling, meandering and custom quilting straight out of the box.

What does the EXCLUSIVE SENSOR SYSTEM™ do?

It senses fabric thickness continuously as you sew and adjusts presser foot pressure automatically, so heavy quilts, fine silks and seamed-over hems all feed evenly without you stopping to adjust settings. The Sensor Foot Lift also raises and lowers the foot automatically, which helps when your hands are guiding fabric.

How many stitches are built in?

The Opal 690Q has 208 built-in stitches, including utility, quilting and decorative stitches, plus 4 programmable alphabets. You can save your favourite combinations in the My Stitches menu, which holds up to 240 stitches across 12 memories.

Is this machine suitable for a confident beginner?

It can work well for a beginner who is ready to invest in a machine that will grow with their skills. The SEWING ADVISOR® takes care of stitch settings, tension and presser foot recommendations once you select your fabric, which removes a lot of the guesswork. Quilters and dressmakers tend to get the most from its features.

Can I sew heavy fabrics like denim or multiple quilt layers?

Yes. The EXCLUSIVE SENSOR SYSTEM™ adjusts presser foot pressure as fabric thickness changes, which keeps feeding even across seam intersections and layered fabric. The Sensor Foot Lift also has an extra-lift position to slide bulky fabric under the foot easily, and the long arm gives you room to manoeuvre quilts.
