Coverstitch Machine Skipped Stitches - How to Fix It

A blunt, bent or wrong needle is the most common cause of skipped stitches on a cover stitch machine. Always start here.

• Replace with a fresh ELx705 needle - this is the recommended needle type for most cover stitch machines
• Match the needle size to your fabric weight - a 90/14 works well for most knit fabrics
• Make sure it's fully inserted with the flat side to the back and tightened securely
• If you can't remember when you last changed the needle, it's overdue

Threading issues are the second most common cause. Remove all threads and re-thread completely - don't just re-thread one path.

• Raise the presser foot before re-threading so the tension discs open properly
• Always thread the looper before the needles
• Go slowly and refer to your manual rather than going from memory

Incorrect differential feed is a very common cause of skipped stitches on knit fabrics. If the fabric is stretching as it feeds, the needle can miss forming a stitch.

• Start with the differential feed set to 1 (neutral)
• For stretchy fabrics, try increasing the differential feed slightly towards 2 to compensate for stretch and test on scrap
• Make small adjustments and test after each change

Too little presser foot pressure can allow the fabric to lift slightly as the needle rises, which can cause skipped stitches.

• If your machine allows presser foot pressure adjustment, try increasing it slightly and testing on scrap
• Check your manual to confirm whether your specific model has this feature

Running too fast, particularly on thick or stretchy fabrics, can cause the machine to skip stitches.

• Slow down and let the machine work at a steady, comfortable pace
• Speed is particularly worth reducing when sewing over thick seams or multiple layers

Skipped stitches specifically at thick seams are a very common cover stitch issue and are caused by the presser foot tilting as it approaches or leaves the thick section.

• Approach thick seams slowly
• Use a hump jumper, or fold a small piece of scrap fabric to the same height as the seam and place it behind the presser foot to keep it level as you sew over the bump
• Make sure the presser foot is level both before and after the thick section before picking up speed

A longer stitch length can help reduce skipped stitches on difficult fabrics by giving the needle more time to form each stitch.

• Try increasing the stitch length slightly and testing on scrap
• Adjust from there based on the result - a longer stitch may also change the appearance of the finished hem

Before returning to your project, test on scrap fabric of the same type. Run a decent length of stitching including any thick seams and check carefully for any skipped stitches before continuing with your actual work.
