Janome 5060 QDC Sewing Machine Review

Sewing machines come in all shapes and sizes.

Ok, no, they’re all pretty much the same shape, but they certainly come in all sorts of sizes and with a variety of different features and luxuries. There are some that are mechanical only and can only offer you a small amount of utility stitches (and, if you’re lucky, a few decorative stitches, too). There are some that come with all of the bells and whistles with hundreds of stitches programmed in, touch screens, and lots of workspace that some sewists may not know what to do with. And then there are sewing machines that fall in the middle somewhere, having just the right amount of features and extras that the intermediate sewist will actually use.

And the 5060 QDC model is one of those Janome sewing machines. This sewing machine is perfect for any sewist. It has all of the basic stitches that you’d need for both quilting and dressmaking, but it also has a bit more for you to play with and grow into if you’re a beginner. It comes with 60 different stitches, all of which are customisable in both stitch width (maximum of 7mm) and stitch length (maximum of 5mm). Six of those stitches are automatic 1-step buttonholes, too!

The screen and stitch selector are very easy to see and use. You have a chart on the front of the machine, so you’ll never lose it!

One thing we love about this Janome sewing machine is its 7-piece Superior Feed System (SFS+). With seven pieces to the feed dog system, you're getting a machine that has a solid feeding system that allows full control of the fabric.

To make the most out of the superior feed system, use with the included walking foot. You’ll be able to sew thick layers and tricky fabrics evenly with the walking foot working with your machine. Quilters will love to be able to bind a quilt with ease and garment makers will rejoice at being able to feed delicate fabrics like organza or lace evenly through the machine.

You’ll be sewing all of your projects quickly with the 5060 QDC. It can sew at a top speed of 820 stitches per minute. Of course, if you’re working with something extra delicate or you don’t feel as confident with the machine quite yet, you can easily control the top speed with the speed slider on the front of the machine. The foot control pedal is also touch-sensitive, so you can easily make sure your machine is working at the speed you need and want it to.

The Janome 5060 QDC Sewing Machine is the perfect size for any sewing room since it has a small footprint, it’s about 406mm tall, 302mm wide, and 177mm deep. It won’t take up too much space on a table, but it also fits comfortably in storage in a closet or under the bed. With the hard cover that comes with the machine, you can be assured that your machine will be safe from both bumps and jolts and dust and dirt while it’s stored away.

It weighs in at 6.4kg. It has a good 6 inches of working space to the right of the needle, too, so you’ll have plenty of space with work with your fabric.

As always, we love it when a machine comes with an extension table included. Extension tables do so much to help us while we sew. If you aren’t using an extension table already, you’re seriously missing out on a superior sewing experience. It aids in keeping your seams straight and even, if you’re sewing something heavy that will pull away from the needle as you sew, and it increases your working sewing space all around.
