Today, we’re going to introduce you to the Husqvarna Emerald 118 sewing machine. This machine will make a wonderful addition to any sewing room or make a great gift to the beginner sewist in your life. It’s practical and easily navigated by anyone who sits down to use it.

The Emerald 118 is not so basic that you’ll get bored with it, and most beginners won’t out-grow it very quickly like they would any other basic machine, but it’s not overly complicated like many of the luxury sewing machines can seem. It’s the perfect compromise!

Husqvarna Viking machines are incredibly well-made, and the Emerald 118 is no different! They last for many years, making it a fantastic investment in your sewing for a low price. This machine has a maximum stitch width of 5mm, customisable width and length of stitches, and easy to navigate dials to both select stitches as well as customise them. Both dials for stitch length and width are located on the front of the machine while the stitch selector dial is on the top of the machine. You’ll also find a handle on the top of the machine that conveniently slides into the machine when not in use. At a maximum weight of 8kg, this machine is easily portable. Take it to any retreat or class without issue!

The Emerald 118 comes with 20 different stitches to choose from, including one automatic 1-step buttonhole for all your garment needs. You’ll be able to make so many amazing projects, piece amazing quilts and beautiful clothes with these stitches! If you’re just starting out in your sewing journey, having a limited selection of stitches will keep you from feeling overwhelmed, but still offer you an array of stitches to choose from to create any type of project. It’s not so basic that you’ll get bored with it easily, If you’re a well-seasoned sewist, you’ll know that these basic stitches are exactly what you need for whatever it is that you enjoy making. It’s perfect for bag making, quilt piecing, and garment sewing, among other projects!

A built-in needle threader makes for easy threading, too. No more squinting and struggling to make sure your machine is threaded properly. You’ll find there’s also a slider on the front of the machine that controls the machine’s maximum speed. You can sew securely knowing that you have the machine at the right speed for your skill level and confidence.

This machine has another awesome feature, too! Usually found on higher-end machines, the automatic needle up/down feature makes sure that your needle is always in the position that you want it in. Leave it up for when you need to sew multiple seams. Leave it down when you want to pivot the fabric without breaking the thread! Perfect for when you’re binding a quilt or sewing on applique.

You’ll have a decent amount of workspace with the Emerald 118. There are six inches to the right of the needle, which is a great amount of space for typical projects like dress-making or piecing quilts.

Something else that makes this sewing machine perfect for beginners?

It comes with a built-in sewing reference chart. It helps you not only navigate the machine itself, but it shows you what presser foot you should be using with each stitch. It also shows you the standard length and width of each stitch so that you know ahead of time what to expect out of each stitch.

You’ll find plenty of storage space in the machine itself. Located in the base of the machine, the compartment on in the front holds every accessory that comes in the box with the Husqvarna Emerald 118. There’s enough space for all of the feet, bobbins, spool holders, screwdrivers, and everything else!
