Brother XR27NT Sewing Machine Review

You may not need all the bells and whistles of a machine that’s computerised, but you want a machine with options and the ability to sew whatever project that comes your way. You might be looking for something sturdy, not too fancy.
That’s why we here at The Sewing Studio love the Brother XR27NT. It’s perfect for both the beginner and experienced sewist that wants control and simplicity as they work on their projects. It’s great for those who sew garments and quilts alike.
Brother sewing machines are well made. They’re both sturdy and easy to navigate. They make great sewing machines for sewists of any skill level, from beginner to advanced!
This machine can handle most fabric weights from light to medium, meaning you can sew just about any project aside from upholstery. You can certainly sew lightweight curtains and the like with this machine, though, so don’t count it out if you’re looking for a machine that can handle home décor projects! This machine can help you to piece quilts of any size and create beautiful clothes for your whole family.
The XR27NT has a built-in needle threader and drop-in bobbin. These two features make threading this machine a breeze! Drop-in bobbins are known to be easier to thread and maintain, being able to see the whole mechanism to be able to dust it, and simply being able to drop the bobbin in place as you’re threading it. You’re less likely to get thread nests with this type of bobbin setting and can easily see if there’s any foreign objects in the way if you ever need to troubleshoot.
The Brother XR27NT features 27 stitches, one of those being an automatic buttonhole, That’s a great variety for this type of machine! Automatic buttonholes are much easier to sew instead of the old 4-step style that most mechanical machines employ. Stitch selection is easy, too! With every stitch type displayed on the front of the machine, you only need to choose the corresponding number using the dial on the side of the machine. The reverse lever is easily found on the front of the machine, too, so that it’s accessible while actively sewing.
You’ll have plenty of ability to customise your stitches. You can adjust both the width and length by using the dials on the top of the machine. The XR27NT has a 6.6mm maximum stitch width. Being able to customise these aspects of a stitch are important when dealing with different fabric types, as well as allows you to easily baste quilts and put in temporary stitches in hems for fitting garments.
With the Brother XR27NT, you can drop the feed dogs by using a lever on the machine that’s tucked away so that you won’t bump it while sewing. Being able to drop the feed dogs is great for anyone who wants to be able to free motion quilt. The feed dogs are there to keep your fabric moving through the machine at an even and direct pace. By lowering them, you’re allowing the fabric to move through the machine at the pace you choose and in whatever direction you need to move it in.
You’ll have a lot of space to work on this machine, too. To the right of the needle, you’ll have 6 inches of workspace. You can roll up quilts for quilting easily with this workspace!
The Brother XR27NT comes with a good amount of accessories in the box, too! With all of the basic feet and all of the necessary accessories you’ll need to get started, you’ll be able to start sewing as soon as you get this machine home and unpacked. Of course, you can always up your sewing game by purchasing extra accessories.

This machine is great for traveling, too. If you’re a quilter that goes on regular quilting retreats, it’s worth getting a machine dedicated to traveling so that you don’t damage your higher end machine and can easily manoeuvre this one on whatever form of transportation you’re taking it on.
With this machine being purely mechanical, it’s less likely to get damaged to the point where it’s not usable, unlike computerised machines that, if the screen is broken it’s more than likely unusable. It’s also lightweight compared to other machines, weighing only 5 to 8kg, so it’s very easy to travel with! It's also easily stored, coming with a soft dust cover to keep the machine clean of harmful dust and dirt.
