Brother Innov-is A16 Sewing Machine Review

The Brother Innov-is A16 Sewing Machine is a great option for the sewist on a budget, but looking for a sturdy or even a beginner-friendly sewing machine.
The Innov-is A16 is equipped with 16 Stitches, all of them utility stitches that are perfect for any kind of project. Just like all Brother sewing machines, you'll find the A16 really intuitive. Three of those stitches are automatic 1-step buttonholes. It’s the perfect amount of stitches for a beginner to get friendly with a sewing machine and learn how to sew both quilts and garments alike!
The screen is a decent size without taking up too much real estate on the front of the machine or blinding you. It’s a backlit LCD screen which means that you’ll be able to clearly see what’s on the screen. And having a computerised machine makes it even easier to select stitches and get to sewing right away. The screen will tell you exactly what stitch you’ve selected by showing you a picture of it as well as a picture of the presser foot you’re meant to be using that comes with the machine.
One of our favourite features of this machine is the lockstitch button. Reversing at the end of every seam can create a lot of bulk and having that lockstitch button really helps to cut down on that bulk. Instead of reversing at the end of your seam, you’ll press this button which will reverse ever so slightly, locking the stitch.
If you’re wanting to learn how to free motion quilt, you’ll love that this machine allows you to drop the feed dogs with just the touch of a button. It makes setting sewing machines up for darning and quilting much quicker and easier so that you don’t have to hassle with screwdrivers and exchanging plates before you sew.
We love a top loading bobbin, and the Brother Innov-is A16 has one! You’ll be able to thread and clean out around the feed dogs and bobbin casing in between projects very easily. Regular cleaning and proper threading really help to extend the life of your sewing machine, meaning that you’ll be able to really make the most out of your investment.
Let’s talk for a moment about the workspace you’ll get with the Innov-is A16. You’ll find that you have 6 inches of workspace to the right of the needle. That’s enough space to quilt small to medium-sized quilts and work on garments of all sizes. And you’ll love the bright LED sewing light that’s built into the machine’s throat. It really illuminates your workspace without the risk of burning your hands if you accidentally bump it.
