Bernette B48 Coverstitch/Overlocker Review
Are you in the market for an amazing overlock machine but incredibly intimidated by them?
Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Some overlockers have a reputation for being finicky and hard to navigate, but they don’t have to be! The Sewing Studio carries a wide range of overlock machines that fit any level of sewist.
The Bernette Funlock B48 Coverstitch and Overlocker Machine is a great tool for sewists looking for a great 2-in-1 machine! It both functions as a normal overlocker, to serge and trim hems and seams, but also works as a coverstich machine that will really make your garments look professionally tailored.
Overlocking and coverstitching also make your projects and garments really last a long time, especially the Funlock B48 with its high quality stitches. It is the top-of-the-line machine of Bernette’s Funlock series and offers a wide range of stitch options that every garment maker will love to use.
We know what you’re thinking:
“Ok, but what is the difference between a coverstitch and an overlock stitch, and why do I need both?”
An overlock machine, or serger, cuts away fabric as it sews, and uses multiple threads and needles to lock the fabric’s raw edge into the stitches. It creates an extremely sturdy seam that won’t fray. It has two loopers to thread, too.
A coverstitch machine, on the other hand, works in tandem with an overlocker, if you’re so inclined. When hemming, the coverstich machine helps to create a flat hem or neckline. It really makes your finished seams look professional and well-made. A normal coverstitch-only machine only has one looper to thread and does not cut away any fabric. A well-done coverstitch looks like two rows of stitching on the top but looks as if it were serged on the bottom. You’ll see this on any garment that you’ve bought pre-made from a store, around the edge of the sleeves or neckline of a shirt, for example.
With both overlocking and coverstitch capabilities, the Bernette Funlock B48 expands your sewing abilities for a low price and saves you the space of owning two machines by combining them into one! It’s not only a space saver, but also saves you the money of having to buy separate two machines to do every job the Funlock B48 allows you do to.
This machine is programmed with 23 Stitches. 15 of these stitches are overlock stitches, 3 coverstitches, 4 combination stiches, and a chain stitch. It covers an obscene number of options for the sewist to operate and customize to do any job they set their mind to. You can use any kind of fabric on this machine, too, and get a beautiful hem or sturdy seam on any project you set your mind to.
This amazing machine supports anywhere from 2 to 5 threads at once, really making it easy to customize whatever you’re working on, both in coverstitch mode and overlock mode. As a coverstitch machine, it can sew between 2.8mm and 5.6mm in width. As a overlock machine, it can stitch up to 7mm in width. And combination stitches? Up to 10mm in width! You can really create anything you set your mind to with this machine in your arsenal.
The Funlock B48 also allows for a rolled hem! Regular straight hems don’t always lay how you want, or they’re too bulky for the type of fabric you’re using. A rolled hem helps with both the drape of the fabric and how obvious the hem is from afar.
We know threading overlockers and coverstitch machines can be frustrating. But we stand by the Bernette Funlock B48 in being easier to thread than many other models. Color coded threading paths make it easy to thread as you can just lay the thread in, unlike many other overlock machines out there. The Bernette Funlock B48 also features a manual needle threader.
The Funlock B48’s knife operates from below, which is safer for you and gives your fabric a cleaner cut than other overlockers. The knife placement also ensures that you can adjust it with just one hand safely. The blade can also be removed in order to use the machine for coverstitch.
The Bernette Funlock B48 boasts a whopping 1300 SPM speed! High speeds can seem scary when it comes to an overlock machine, but the higher speeds are helpful! It helps make cleaner cuts on the fabric so that it doesn’t snag or fray.
Bright LED lighting really allows you to see what you’re working on without straining your eyes while threading or sewing. No more squinting or guessing that you’re sewing in the right place- something you definitely don’t want to be doing when it comes to using an overlocker! Mistakes aren’t always fixable when chopping away fabric as you sew, so you want to be absolutely sure that you’re able to see what you’re doing. A well-lit machine is an easier-to-use machine!
