Janome AT2000D Air Thread Product Review & Demonstration
The Janome AT2000D Air Thread Professional Overlocker redefines convenience and precision in overlocking. Designed for sewists of all levels, this advanced machine combines cutting-edge technology with user-friendly features to deliver flawless seams, decorative edges and durable finishes. It's perfect for sewers ready to leave looper-threading frustrations behind for good - the One-Push Air Threading System uses a blast of air to send thread through both the upper and lower loopers in seconds. Along with colour-coded threading paths and a built-in needle threader that handles both left and right needles, the full setup takes just minutes. Zero fuss!
Stitch options cover 2-thread, 3-thread and 4-thread overlocking, flatlock and rolled hems, with a built-in spreader for fine 2-thread finishes on hems, curves and ruffles. A flick of the rolled hem lever switches the machine over without removing a stitch plate, so moving between standard overlocking and a narrow rolled hem on silks or satins takes moments. The 8-piece feed dog system grips everything from slinky knits to denim with confidence, and differential feed (0.5–2.0) keeps wovens from puckering and stretch fabrics from waving.
Manual tension dials sit at the front of the machine for direct, lay-in control over each thread path, which means you can fine-tune tension for the specific fabric and thread combination in front of you. Adjustable foot pressure with five levels lets the machine settle correctly on lightweight chiffons through to heavier denims and home furnishing fabrics. Stitch length is variable from 1.0 to 5.0mm and seam width adjusts from 2.0 to 5.7mm.
Three micro-switches built into the side cover, looper cover and presser foot bar keep the machine safe to use, only allowing it to run when all three are correctly engaged. Sewing speed reaches up to 1,300 stitches per minute, with a retractable upper knife for seaming without trimming and a heavy-duty cutting system that handles bulky fabrics cleanly. The result is a professional-grade overlocker that finally feels approachable from the moment you sit down to thread it.

Materials and Build Quality
Say goodbye to the frustration of threading loopers. The new thread delivery system with lever ratchet mechanism provides stable air threading. Simply insert the thread into the looper threading hole, follow the easy steps and a blast of air will blow the thread through the looper effortlessly, saving time and simplifying setup.
Eight feed dogs spread across the throat plate work the fabric forward evenly from front to back, gripping fine knits without bunching and pulling denim through without skipping. The wider contact area is what allows the AT2000D to move so confidently between fabric weights, and it pairs with adjustable foot pressure across five levels to settle the presser foot correctly on whatever sits beneath it.
The cutting system uses precision-ground blades that trim through bulky multi-layered seams as cleanly as they do single-layer chiffon. A twist of the dial retracts the upper knife when you want to seam without trimming, locking it into a guide position. Three internal micro-switches in the side cover, looper cover and presser foot bar prevent the machine from running unless every cover is correctly closed.
The Difference is in the Details
Setup is where this overlocker really earns its keep. Both loopers thread in seconds rather than minutes, and the colour-coded paths mean you do not have to memorise which thread goes where. Top speed of 1,300 stitches per minute keeps long seam runs moving and the rolled hem lever switches stitch types without unbolting a plate.

The 8-piece feed system and five-level foot pressure adjustment make the AT2000D as comfortable on slippery satins and lightweight knits as it is on denim and home furnishing weights.
Built for Speed and Stitch Variety
Top speed of 1,300 stitches per minute keeps long seam runs moving, and 2/3/4-thread overlocking, flatlock and rolled hem options handle production-style sewing without slowing the project down.
Inside the Janome AT2000D
Air Threading System
A one-push delivery method blows thread cleanly through internal pathways inside the machine, replacing the most frustrating part of overlocker setup with a process that takes well under a minute per looper.
8-Piece Feed Dog System
Eight strategically placed feed teeth share the work of moving fabric through the machine, distributing grip more evenly than three- or five-piece systems and keeping difficult materials tracking straight throughout the seam.
Manual Lay-In Tension Dials
Front-mounted dials let you see and adjust each thread's tension independently. Lay-in design means thread drops straight into the path, removing the hassle of routing through hidden tension discs during colour changes.
Built-In Needle Threader and Spreader
A single switch threads either the left or right needle automatically, while the engaged spreader produces narrow 2-thread finishes for ruffles and curves without swapping parts. The N setting returns the dial to standard sewing.
Adjustable Cutting and Stitch Width
Seam width adjusts from 2.0 to 5.7mm via the cutting width dial, with the upper knife retractable for non-trimmed seams. Variable stitch length runs from 1.0 to 5.0mm for fine to decorative finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Let us help with the answers.
How long does air threading actually take compared to manual?
Most owners thread both loopers in under a minute once familiar with the process. Manual looper threading on a comparable machine often takes ten minutes or longer, particularly for sewers new to overlocking.
Is the AT2000D suitable if I have never used an overlocker before?
The air threading and built-in needle threader make the AT2000D one of the most approachable overlockers Janome produces, but the manual tension dials reward sewers with some prior machine experience. Beginners often grow into it quickly.
Can I use the AT2000D with decorative or specialist threads?
Yes. The looper threading system handles standard cones, decorative threads and finer specialist threads, which makes the machine particularly capable for embellished edges, ruffles and lingerie work.
What is the difference between flatlock, overlock and rolled hem on this machine?
Overlock seams and finishes raw edges in one pass. Flatlock joins two pieces with a flat decorative seam, often used on activewear. Rolled hem produces a fine narrow finish ideal for napkins, ruffles and lightweight fabrics.
Will I need to send the machine away for servicing?
No. The Sewing Studio is a certified Janome service centre, so any guarantee work or routine servicing can be carried out by our in-house team. Get in touch and we will arrange everything from collection to return.
Our standard width fabric can be cut as a Fat Quarter, measuring 50cm x 1/2 the width of the bolt. Above is an example of how your fabric will be received, depending on the quantity ordered.
We also offer a sample service, where you can order 1 single fat quarter of any standard width fabric, to have at home and compare colours. When you are finished, you can send them back to us for a refund (feel free to contact us for more information on this service).
Our fabric can be cut as a Long Quarter, measuring a minimum of 25cm x width of bolt. We will supply the fabric as a continuous length (eg; if you bought 1.25m it will be sent as one piece of fabric).
