Elna Sewing Machines are great machines for a bargain of a price.

This is not a “basic” sewing machine by any means. This machine is perfect for anyone, both beginners and well-traveled quilters and dressmakers alike. This machine isn’t overly complicated, so anyone can feel comfortable using it.

The eXcellence 580+ has 120 different stitches built into it. Seven of those are automatic 1-step buttonholes, giving the dressmakers a good amount of variety no matter what fabric they’re using or how decorative they want to get with their buttonholes. It has all of the necessary utility stitches as well as a good amount of decorative stitches to really take your projects up a level.

The stitches on this machine are easily customisable. You can get a maximum stitch width of 7mm with this machine! The buttons to customise are found right on the front of the machine near the easy-to-read screen that isn’t too bright or too dull, and certainly not too harsh on anyone’s eyes.

One of our favourite features on this machine is the automatic thread cutter! Once you have used this feature, you won’t want to go back to having to trim your threads after each seam. It will cut the tails closer to the fabric (but not so close that it will cut the fabric or your fingers!) and will save you thread and you won’t have to wind your bobbins as often. Nor will you get frustrated with the dull blade on the side of the machine that only frays the thread after a while; you’ll get a clean cut every time!

We also can’t stress this enough- we love knee lifts! And the 580+ comes with one! This feature allows you to keep a good grip on your work when you need to lift the presser foot for any reason. It’s perfect for binding quilts and bags since you won’t need to let go of your quilt while you pivot the project to get a continuous seam. Dressmakers will also appreciate this feature when they have to keep their hands on their fabric, too!

You’ll fall in love with all of the other awesome features of this sewing machine, too!

If you like chain piecing, or maybe don’t have space for your pedal control, you’ll love the start/stop button included on the front of the machine. It also has automatic tension, which is a godsend for those of us who are intimidated by tension dials! You can also control your maximum speed with the slider on the front of the machine, too, which is perfect for really delicate projects or beginners who aren’t always confident going at top speed just yet.

We just know you’ll appreciate the large working space this machine features. It has 8 inches of workspace to the right of the needle, which is perfect for quilting and dressmaking alike. Many projects might require just that extra couple of inches you get with this machine compared to a basic sewing machine that only has 6 inches of workspace. You’ll be able to fit bigger quilts through this machine as you quilt or bind them, which is truly an asset you want to have if you’re making quilts often.

Quilters need extension tables to keep their seams straight and even, and dressmakers will appreciate it as well on their larger projects, like dresses and coats.
