Use your Embellisher with confidence Tutor: Molly Tufnell Saturday 5th July
In the morning we will construct a series of samples that will enable you to consider your machine as a way of letting your creativity run riot. We will look at the potential for creating incredible textured surfaces for their own sake, or surfaces to be stitched into. We will also explore the potential to make a simple image on a ground fabric using nothing but loose fabrics, threads and fibres. At the same time we will look at ways of avoiding clogged machines and broken needles!!! In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to use the skills you have learnt with your own project. You may just wish to continue exploring and creating samples but alternatively, you may decide to work on anything from personalizing items such as clothing or perhaps fabric bags, right through to creating a new surface to embroider or indeed, to enhance an existing piece of work. The time will be yours to use in a way that you find to be both productive and fun.

Your Tutors:

Mary Lantsbery
Mary first started out studying history of costume and fashion at art school followed by completing city and guilds in dressmaking and tailoring and a further 18 months studying bespoke tailoring, making mainly bridal wear. Mary’s working career started with teaching needlework at secondary school, and after four years she decided to teach adult further education, with dressmaking and tailoring being Mary’s area of expertise. With over 30 years experience of teaching at a variety of schools and colleges Mary has become extremely popular and has students that come back year after year.

Mary Bradley
Mary first started patchwork in 1987 and since then has gone on to setup copper quilters group in Hayle, as well as running courses, workshops and starting studio quilters for us at the sewing studio. Mary decided to formalise her teaching skills a few years ago and attended Penwith College to achieve her 7407 teaching certificate.

Molly Tufnell
Molly comes from a family of non textile people so had no one to show her how! Molly knows what it's like to want to do something but feel like your facing a brick wall. Molly taught herself every textile craft you can think of; spinning, weaving, tapestry, patchwork, embroidery, tatted lace, etc. Molly went to an evening class to learn bobbin lace. After Molly left formal teaching she had classes teaching bobbin and tatted lace in Redruth for adults and children and as a designer/maker developed a range of tatted lace and sterling silver jewellery which she sold throughout the West Country. Molly went to a class at Penzance Art School for creative embroidery and that's when she decided to do something about formalizing her training and began the HNC, BA (hons) and MA journey and is now a qualified teacher and has a HNC in creative textiles as well as a BA (hons) in Textiles and a Masters degree in contemporary Visual Art.

Patty Murphy
Patty has completed numerous courses including City & Guilds to learn a variety of techniques. Patty has also spent 6 years working for the Quilters Guild, as a Representative and Council member, and had the privilege to be a Judge at Quilts UK, Malvern. “I believe that one never stops learning’ whether it is to ones liking or not!"
